The melt-shop

Scrap

Scrap arrives at our facilities by rail and by road for delivery to the melt shop. There are over 20 different grades of scrap, each representing a different level of quality. Scrap ranges from scrapped cars – which often contain impurities such as copper from copper wiring – to turnings from machining factories where the steel tends to have fewer tramp elements. Each of our products has a different recipe for the scrap employed depending on its final use. Some wire rods can be drawn down to just 0.5mm diameter by our customers, so it is essential that the scrap we use for such products has few impurities.
